The next generation of bioengineered foods is already hitting store shelves, and consumers are very concerned and confused! First, Impossible Burgers are coming to grocery stores and restaurants nationwide. Second, the Arctic Apple is now available at a midwestern grocery chain and on Amazon. Finally, the AquaBounty Salmon will soon be swimming into US stores after already schooling in Canadian retail stores. What do these new foods have in common? They are all the result of new laboratory techniques such as gene editing and gene silencing. But make no mistake: These foods have no place in your organic and natural sets, because they are GMOs that do not qualify for Non-GMO Verification.
It’s also important to note that none of these foods are currently being labelled as GMOs, and even new federal rules may not require them to be. The only way to be sure one is steering clear of all genetically modified food is to look for the Butterfly. Everyone deserves an informed choice about whether or not to consume genetically modified organisms! (Bonus point: Organic certification is terrific, but it does not require testing for GMOs. Only the Butterfly offers that level of supply chain integrity.)
